I Am who I Am – or, Am I what I Do?

[flv:http://www.michaeljemery.com/_media/video/identity1.flv 480 360]

Have you ever noticed this at a social mixer or when meeting someone for the first time, the question “so what do you do?” almost always tends to come up?

What’s even more strange is that the immediate response we seem to blurt out while our brain is on auto-pilot is something like, “well I am a ______”.

The other person nods to acknowledge you as if they know all about you already…

Over the past few years I’ve had a lot of fun with this question. Sometimes, I’ll ask for clarification politely and respond with, “do you mean professionally?” and then give a description of one of the niches I focus upon in my practice. Other times, I just randomly answer with the last thing I did that day. Of course, I try to be courteous and gauge my response to the other person’s demeanor and assumed level of playfulness.

But, its still fun to have fun… :)

From an NLP perspective, we are a lot more than what we believe ourselves to be. We are constant change.  We are more than what we are aware of in this moment. You are pure capacity for experience. What do you want to experience? Why?

If I can help you find answers and create solutions, just let me know!

Are You Manipulated by Fear, Shame, and Guilt?

[flv:http://www.michaeljemery.com/_media/video/FearShameGuilt.flv 480 360]

Many people are manipulated by fear, shame, and guilt. When I studied marketing and advertising in undergrad, I realized that people would make buying decisions that were largely based upon scarcity.

This is the premise behind having a sale – and the scarcity (fear of loss) anchor can be leveraged by pointing out how much a customer will “save” by buying now. In reality, they’re not saving anything – they are spending less.

There are many more examples I could share with you and they all tap into fear, shame, and guilt. Be free! Understand how your buying strategy works or how you make decisions (to fall in love, to choose friends, to choose what you eat, or why not to exercise :) )so that you are the one in control of your life!

Synesthstesia – When Senses Collide and How to Use This To Your Advantage

[flv:http://www.michaeljemery.com/_media/video/synethstesia2.flv 480 360]

A synesthstesia is a neurologically-based phenomenon in which stimulation of one of the five senses results in an automatic and involuntary experience in a different sense.

Here’s an example: See a chocolate truffle and your mouth begins to water. Or you could smell chocolate and experience the same. For some people, just reading these words about chocolate is causing their mouths to water… ;)

Funny huh? :)

Or if chocolate isn’t your thing try pizza, a burrito, or your favorite snack…

Now, on the other hand sometimes synethstesias aren’t the most beneficial:

That’s when hearing your boss’ voice gives you the chills or looking at an audience that you will be addressing causes you to feel shaky inside. A common one is when a couple has been together for a certain amount of time and they begin to “mind-read” each other and assume that certain likes have specific meanings. We’ve probably all experienced that look from our significant other that causes us to feel defensive.

But, you don’t have to…

Most personal development coaches who use neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) or Ericksonian hypnosis with their clients should understand that synesthstesias are elicited in powerful strategies. Usually a non-beneficial strategy looks like this:

Visual External > (-) Kinesthetic Internal

So, an explanation of the formula above could be seeing something or someone that causes a person to have a negative or undesirable feeling internally (emotion or body sensation like tightness in the stomach or weakness in the knees). While a beneficial strategy could look like this:

Visual External > Kinesthetic Internal

The only difference between a beneficial strategy and a non-beneficial strategy is simply how you feel internally. Yep, those emotions again. :)

Nearly every time that I work with a client I use synesthstesia to link positive emotions around a situation. It would feel great to find that every time you saw your boss or heard your boss’s voice that you felt a sense of calm, confident clarity wash over your body, wouldn’t it? Or, the moment you left work you suddenly begin to feel a great desire to go exercise… :)

There are lots of options! And, a lot can be changed in your life by learning how to control synesthstesias. If you see how I can help, just let me know.

The Next Smallest Step in Personal Development

[flv:http://www.michaeljemery.com/_media/video/smalleststep.flv 480 360]

Ever thought about doing something really big?

I mean something time-consuming. Important. Monumental…

Life-changing?

I’ll bet you have… in a way. Maybe it was college or participating in a sport? For others it may have been learning a musical instrument or traveling to a foreign country. There are countless possibilities.

For you, when you first considered what you were going to do it may have seemed overwhelming. To have tried to do it all at once would have been utterly overwhelming, if not impossible. Yet, you did it…

Getting lost in the process helps because it can distract the conscious mind, but from time to time you’ll likely fall out of the flow and try to assess where you are in the process. This is fine, but how do you get back into the flow? You can probably relate to this – getting a strong start on a project and then running out of steam as all-of-a-sudden the fun project turns into a daunting task…

Taking the next smallest step is the most effective way to get back into a state of flow where you are making steady progress toward what you want.

This is why my Coaching Gym is such a productive use of time. Challenges can be addressed in real-time as they come up. Because the Coaching Gym offers unlimited coaching to its members, precise, incremental steps can be used to rapidly reframe problems and create resources for empowerment.

Feel free to comment, use the forum, or be in touch with me regarding a coaching session. I’m here to see you succeed.

Michael J. Emery’s Life Coaching Process for Personal Development

[flv:http://www.michaeljemery.com/_media/video/meprocess.flv 480 360]

What is the coaching process that Michael J. Emery uses with his clients?

I get this question quite often.

Is there a path that I follow? Do address certain things in specific orders?

Not particularly…

Oh, oh, oh can we create a timeline and write down goals?

Sure – if that’s something that has worked for you in the past… :)

There are three specific steps that occur when I work with a client. The very first step is to put out what I refer to as: the immediate fires. It’s like triage. How do we get a client up to speed? Whether that’s making more money, smoothing out relationship challenges, health changes, and esteem improvements. identify client’s current beliefs about him/herself and what their desires are at the present time. This is about solving the daily dilemmas and crisis that arise.

As this is occurring, a client will begin to become consciously aware of the beliefs that operate within their paradigm. Sometimes the client actually isn’t ready to identify beliefs. Some people just want a situational change. Usually though, while working with a person during their first few sessions – seemingly unrelated elements in other areas of his/her life will begin to come up and this person will be faced with addressing them. When those elements that “pop up” are addressed they often reveal the beliefs that created them in the first place. Addressing and identifying the client’s beliefs is the second step.

As human beings, we learn through association. Every thing that happens to us, serves to reinforce or create a belief that operates within our current paradigm. (This might be philosophically heavy for some people, and if so think of it like this: you’ll notice whatever you pay attention to… if you like shiny, new, red cars then you probably won’t notice all the old white ones out there.)

So, where I’m going with this is that whatever happened in your life includes the entire environment during that situation – yes, all the stuff you didn’t notice or were not paying attention to at the time. Most of us create a cause and effect relationship in our mind. “That thing” happened to me in the past and that’s why I am who I am today.

Well, maybe…? We just don’t have enough information to conclude that one distant event defines ALL of who you are today and what you are capable of tomorrow.

As these realizations begin to dawn in a client’s mind, a lot of flexibility enters into the coaching session and we spend less time working on putting out the “fires” and more time creating a resourceful belief system.

Lastly, in the third step there is the point when a client’s focus shifts from having problems and challenges to just wanting more resources. He/She has learned how to manage his/her emotional states and understands how to use anchors, synesthesias, swish patterns, and all the techniques to his/her advantage. This is the point that a client realizes that personal development or self-actualization is a journey. We heal ourselves and find ourselves in a position to heal others – in turn, we think bigger and face the challenges of growth and must grow and heal again. It’s a process. It’s change. And, it’s one of the few things you can count on with consistency. :)

Non-linear Life Coaching – An Organic Approach to Personal Development

[flv:http://www.michaeljemery.com/_media/video/nonlinearcoaching.flv 480 360]

There are a wide variety of coaching models out there, and certain ones work for certain individuals.

I’ve distinguished the generalized differences between coaches, therapists, and consultants as follows (remember, these are generalizations and often overlaps occur):

Coach

Coaching is typically in an equal partnership relationship between a client and a coach – the coach is responsible for motivating and empowering the client to achieve their desired goals and outcomes. Coaching also operates from the perspective that the client has all the resources inside of them – they just need to be brought to the surface.

Therapist

Therapy involves a relationship between a therapist and a patient in which the therapist is expected to diagnose problems and relieve symptoms. Traditionally, a therapist is outside the outside of the problem and the relationship is set up so that the therapist has the resources that the patient needs.

Consultant

Consulting is a relationship in which an expert is brought in to give advice and tell others what to do based on his or her expertise.

Non-Linear Life Coaching

It occurred to me that my coaching practice rarely involves timelines and goal setting. I have found that goal setting doesn’t seem to work for most people. Additionally, the further out a goal is supposed to take place, the more chaotic and unpredictable achievement becomes. After all, a goal is created in the present moment with the resources available at that time. Change is inevitable and often people find that what they thought they wanted no long is motivational enough to move them toward achieving a specific goal.

End State Energy

There is something to be said about the outcome of a goal when it is achieved. Sure, there is likely an obvious result – at times tangible, at times intangible. But beyond the result, there is something else…

An emotion! Or, 2 or 3 or 4 or more…

I believe that emotions are the real drivers behind our actions. E-motion; often referred to as energy-in-motion. From an NLP perspective, I’d venture a guess that you’re more likely to stay on track with a goal (or not even necesarily need to create certain goals) when you are riding high in-state of the end-state energy.

This is where I begin with clients. If you really want to achieve a specific goal, you can make a timeline and set objectives and try to drive yourself toward achieving it and/or away from failing.

Or… You can learn how create triggers and anchors in your environment so that as you are being pulled toward your goal you are experiencing the emotions that are the underlying reason for your actions. Being irresistibly propelled toward your goals without any effort sure beats struggling to stay on task with your objectives and desperately trying to meet your timeline.

There are important things to do in life. Some can be put off for a little while and others require immediate attention. By learning how to harness your emotional states you can find great stores of energy waiting to be put in motion.

If you find yourself curious to know how Ericksonian hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) can help you move toward what you want to experience in all things health, wealth, and relationships then take a moment and schedule a session with me or join my Coaching Gym.
