What is anxiety and how is it different than fear?
Anxiety can be a very unpleasant state that is a combination of other emotions such as fear, apprehension and worry. Physically, anxiety manifests itself through heart palpitations, nausea, headaches, chest pain, trembling, sweating and a variety of other somatic effects.
From an NLP or hypnosis perspective, what can be done to help manage or reduce anxiety?
It has been said that human beings maintain anxiety through operant conditioning; when we see or encounter something associated with a previous traumatic experience, anxious feelings resurface. We might feel temporarily relieved when we avoid situations which make us anxious, but this only increases anxious feelings the next time we are in the same position, and we will want to escape the situation again and therefore will not make any progress against the anxiety.
First, how important to you is the actual cause of your anxiety? It must be about something important, right…?
Common anxieties include:
- Financial – debt, indecisiveness about career direction, retirment, education costs
- Social anxiety – networking, meeting new friends, sales
- Compulsiveness – typically dealing with sex, religion or the topic of death
- Test taking – inability to focus or remember topics while experiencing pressure
- Dating – approaching potential partners
