Meditation is as old as creation, because it is an inherent state of mindfulness in all of creation. It is simple, natural. Although like anything else, it has been through a process of evolution and sometimes de-evolution in the way human beings have realized it. The difference with humans though according to science, is that we have intellect and self-awareness. I believe they drew this conclusion by animals having no interest in their own reflection, so this is really still dubious. Anyway, as we have seen by the way of our modern culture, intellect and self-awareness can be a blessing and a curse. Meditation as most westerners have come to know it; thanks to the 60’s and 70’s, is rooted in Buddhist tradition, but it has been used in all religions and traditions of the world in some form or another, and even by those who practice no religion or do not follow any tradition. The method pertains to allowing a natural relaxation of thought processes to observe a-new. This is achieved through a consistency of not too hard, not too soft concentration. You do not need to make your mind blank to be meditating. When you want to learn how to meditate is as I said earlier, the process of observation becoming more refined through transcendence of preconception, and the use of that capacity to observe, to contemplate things more clearly. With this process, often the thought processes may stop all by themselves. One has to be discerning about what they meditate on as there are many ways to cause damage to oneself by being mislead. This misleading only tends to happen because people are rarely asked to question and look at things clearly for themselves.

If something clearly isn’t loving or transparent, it can’t be very accurate. This is why another important aspect of insight meditation is to focus on virtues or universal laws, one’s we’ve all heard like “Do unto others as you would have done unto you”… etc. In contemplating this principle for instance, you can uncover it’s purpose, in observing it clearly, you can see if it holds value. When one sees the value in a principle, they naturally begin acting in accordance with it. No punishment system needed.
